There is an argument that holds that being an addict does not necessarily make you a bad parent, or, at least, no worse a parent than many. I will return to this later in the chapter. It is well parental addiction and the impact on children 35 documented, nonetheless, that serious addiction often goes hand in hand with financial insecurity, unemployment, poor diet, poor health care, and other manifestations of neglect (Kroll & Taylor, 2003). Even where money is not an issue, children are inevitably caught up in the chaotic lifestyles of their parents and may be exposed to all kinds of danger and risk.
Very often, children of addicts are adept at concealing the reality of their home lives. They may also have developed hardened, cynical attitudes to the adult world in general, unable to believe that anybody is capable of altruistic concern. The examples that come to mind are usually drug or alcohol related. One thinks of latency children who are repeatedly humiliated by their parent turning up at school drunk and argumentative. Children who never bring a note from home, who repeatedly “lose” parental addiction and the impact on children 41 permission slips, and who cannot muster the cash for the next outing are sometimes covering for parents whose focus is on the next drink or how to achieve the next “high”.
